The University of Electro Communications (UEC Tokyo) is a national university located in Chofu-city, Tokyo. We offer undergraduate, master’s and doctoral courses in informatics and engineering. Based on its name, we are often thought that our fields of specialization are limited to electricity and communication. However, we conduct education and research in a broad range of fields that share as a common denominator a grounding in informatics, electricity and communications, such as materials science, life sciences, photonics, electronics、robotics, mechanical engineering and media science, etc.

The characteristic feature of UEC education is that it is multi layered. There are hands on classes with a wealth of seminars and laboratory work, onsite career-oriented education relying on our strong relationship with industry. With fully developed facilities and equipment, we are producing skilled scientists and engineers equipped with advanced specialized expertise who will contribute to the global community. We developed our educational program to foster the capacity to enjoy building things and to increase creativity and we have implemented projects such as the “robot mechanics workshop,” “electronic engineering workshop,” and “human media workshop.”

We are perennially near the top of rankings compiled by several mass media outlets regarding “quality of employment.” Graduates who have received an extensive technical education covering fundamentals and applications have both advanced specialized knowledge and an excellent character not only in Japan but internationally.

The undergraduate course is offered in Japanese only, while many international students in the doctoral course conduct their studies in English. In the master’s course, various classes are supported in English, and some students have completed courses in English in recent years. In addition to degree courses, there are a few non-degree programs in which students can engage themselves in research activities.

The paper entrance examinations are required to be admitted to the undergraduate and master’s courses, while it is an oral interview (either in Japanese or English) for the doctoral course. We currently have a couple of university-recommended MEXT scholarship programs only in the graduate school, which have different examination processes.

We have scholarship programs that can be used after the enrollment. However, most the scholarship programs are provided by scholarship foundations that expect the scholarship recipients to have Japanese language skills. Most of our privately-funded international students can receive a full or half-tuition exemption, if they meet the necessary conditions for application (i.e. GPA). There is also a special financial support system only for the doctoral course students at our re fu Official website
