Expenses For Medical Treatment

Foreign residents who will be staying in Japan for three months or more have to subscribe to National Health Insurance programme. Subscribers to the National Health Insurance programme have to pay only 30% of the total medical expenses for any treatment covered by this insurance. Take not that the medical cost for treatments not covered by the insurance scheme has to be paid in full at your own expense.

REMARKS :

  • Enrollment procedures for National Health Insurance System are carried out at the local ward or municipal office, and yearly premium is about JPY 20,000 in most cases.
  • The annual premium varies by area according to the municipality and year income. Students without a source of income while in Japan usually pay a reduced premium.
  • Expenses for medical treatment not covered by the insurance must be paid in full at your own expense.
