Ibaraki University: A Gateway to Global Learning in Japan

Ibaraki University is a national university located in Mito City, Ibaraki Prefecture. The university is dedicated to promoting sustainable development through education and research.

Founded in 1949, the university comprises five colleges and a school: The Colleges of Humanities and Social Sciences, Education, Science, Engineering, and Agriculture, as well as the School of Collaborative Regional Innovation. These colleges and schools offer a wide range of undergraduate and graduate programs. Ibaraki University contributes to building a sustainable society through unique research and education. In particular, our world-class strengths are quantum beam science, which takes advantage of the accumulation of facilities in the surrounding area, and adaptation science for climate change. We hope many students from around the globe will join us in our research and educational endeavors.

We are deeply committed to “student success,” viewing it as a reflection of each student’s sense of fulfillment and achievement in terms of academic and personal growth. This commitment shapes our learner-oriented education and student support services.
The university offers a Tuition Fee Exemption Program that provides partial or full tuition waivers based on academic performance and financial need. Currently, Ibaraki University does not offer pre-arrival scholarships, but international students can apply for scholarships offered by private organizations after enrollment.

Mito City, where the university is located, offers a unique blend of nature, history, and accessibility. Neither a bustling metropolis nor a remote countryside town, it is an ideal place for students seeking a balanced lifestyle. The city boasts historical landmarks like the Kōdōkan, a former samurai school, and the Kairakuen, one of Japan’s three great gardens. Nearby, Hitachi Seaside Park is famous for its seasonal flower displays and has been featured in global travel rankings as a must-see destination. With the sea and mountains nearby and Tokyo just a short train ride away, students can experience the best of urban and natural Japan.

The university provides student dormitories and various cultural exchange opportunities to support international students. After enrolling, students are invited to participate in international exchange events such as welcome parties, cultural workshops, and international exchange trips. These activities foster cross-cultural understanding and help students build lasting friendships. With its welcoming atmosphere and culturally rich surroundings, Ibaraki University provides students with a rewarding academic journey and vibrant life experience in Japan.
