Reservation Program For Monbukagakusho Honors Scholarship For Privately Financed International Students

Scholarship amount
JPY 48,000 per month (The amount is subject to change each academic year.)
Eligibility / conditions for applying
  1. Applicants taking the EJU in June 2023, and enrolling as regular students (excluding research students, trainees, non-degree students, auditing students, etc.) in a university undergraduate school, a junior college, a collee of technology (3rd grade and above), or a specialized training college in Japan between September 2023 and April 2024.
  2. Applicants taking the EJU in November 2023, and enrolling as regular students (excluding research students, trainees, non-degree students, auditing students, etc.) in a university undergraduate school, a junior college, a college of technology (3rd grade and above), or a speccialized training college in Japan between April 2023 and October 2023.
  3. Applicants must take any of the following eight EJU subject test combinations.
    1. Japanese as a Foreign Language only
    2. Japanese as a Foreign Language and Mathematics (Course 1 or 2)
    3. Japanese as a Foreign Language, Mathematics (Course 1 or 2), and Japan and the World
    4. Japanese as a Foreign Language, Mathematics (Course 1 or 2) and Science
    5. Japanese as a Foreign Language and Science
    6. Japanese as a Foreign Language and Japan and the World
    7. Mathematics (Course 1 or 2) and Science
    8. Mathematics (Course 1 or 2) and Japan and the World

Those taking the English version of the Mathematics (Course 1 or 2), Science, or Japan & the World tests are also eligible to apply.

Note 1: Those enrolling in a graduate school are not eligible to participate in this reservation program.
Note 2: If a particular subject test combination is taken by a very small number of examinees, there may be cases where no scholarship candidates will be selected from that group.
Note 3: Applicants will be considered for selection on the basis of the subjects they indicated on their EJU Examination application form, regardless of whether they are not taking certain subject tests.
Duration of scholarship
After a scholarship has been reserved for an applicant, it is awarded for a certain period that is based on the time that the applicant enrolls in a Japanese university undergraduate school, junior college, a college of technology (3rd grade and above), or specialized training college.
For enrollments initiated by October 2023 (June 2023 EJU examinees only)
Six months, from October 2023 to March 2024
For enrollments initiated between November 2023 and April 2024
(June and November 2023 EJU examinees) Twelve months, from April 2024 to March 2025
For enrollments initiated between May and October 2024
(November 2023 EJU examinees only) Six months, from October 2024 to March 2025
Application procedures
In order to be considered for reservation, applicants need to mark a circle in the appropriate box on the EJU Examination application form.
Selection
The following conditions will decide the reservation recipients among candidates for this scholarship.

  1. Overseas examinees whose EJU Examination score is in the top rank for each subject test combination set out in above-mentioned “Eligibility / conditions for applying” in their own country or region where the EJU Examination is administered..
  2. Examinees, regardless of being in Japan or overseas, whose scores is in the top rank for each subject test combination set out in above-mentioned “Eligibility / conditions for applying”, for each country and region where the EJU Examination is administered.
Notification of the selection results
Applicants selected for the scholarship will be notified with the Reservation Notice for Monbukagakusho Honors Scholarship for Privately Financed International Students (hereafter, “Reservation Notice”) to the address which examinees wrote on the EJU Examination application form.
Acceptance of scholarship
In order to be able to claim their scholarships, candidates need to submit their Reservation Notice and the prescribed scholarship application to their host university/college, which will forward the documents to JASSO.
Please note that anyone who changes affiliation (by transferring to another school, etc.) after being selected as a scholarship recipient cannot receive the scholarship again as a reservation holder, even if affiliation changed during the scholarship payment period indicated in section “Duration of scholarship”)
